Our Story
Aakkam is an initiative of Golden Gates and Emerald Valley schools, Salem. It is a centre for alternate and sustainable development studies, started in 2012. Aakkam provides a lot of exciting avenues for the students, parents and the general public to learn about, to research and work on alternate and sustainable models in all fields – technology, power, water management, solid waste management, farm practices, household consumables, food etc. besides economic and social issues. Aakkam has been initiating and supporting active research in these areas.
Aakkam Eco Products – mainly body and hair wash powders, dish wash, tooth powder etc. were being prepared by the students for the past five years and being sold at the Aakkam Eco Store at the school. During this pandemic with the schools closed Aakkam has taken up making these products on a larger scale and marketing them to reach the public.
Our products include organic vegetables, plants (herbs, ornamental & flowering plants & saplings) handmade paper products, herbal bath requirements, herbal skin care, herbal oil , herbal dishwash and herbal health drinks.
Inspired By Nature
We in India have the greatest legacy of an ancient culture and a rich tradition. Our lives were one with nature and all that we used every day was derived from nature. Our great grandmothers and grandmothers used such simple yet wonderful recipes to meet their requirements for personal hygiene and for cleaning – These were what we would now call exotic, organic or all natural!. These recipes had been lovingly handed over from one generation to another.
But somewhere in the last fifty years these valuable practices were slowly replaced by all that was western. Benefits of natural herbs were scorned upon and we began believing in the magic of chemicals. Today more than ever before people are beginning to realize the benefits of natural and organic products and are keen on keeping away from chemicals – but what are the easily available alternatives for tooth pastes, soaps, shampoos and dish wash powders? And again aren’t these alternative products so highly priced that they are beyond the reach of the common man?
This is where Aakkam steps in with its range of AFFORADABLE ALTERNATIVES
Aakkam Eco Products is not a commercial venture – rather an experimental effort to get more people to change over to organic products. So while our products will be of the highest standard, our prices will remain modest to ensure that more and more people return to natural products and stay away from the chemical laden ones that have flooded the markets.
